Form 1098-VLI and the CP321N Notice: Getting the VIN Right

Lenders that receive $600 or more of qualified interest send Form 1098-VLI with the interest and the VIN. Use those figures when you file. If the VIN on Schedule 1-A is missing or wrong, the IRS sends a CP321N notice and may disallow the deduction until it's fixed.

Check the VIN

VINs have 17 characters, never use I, O or Q, and the 9th character is a check digit. Lientally recomputes it so a typo shows up before the IRS sees it.
